Matyas Eörsi headed PACE Observer delegation to Ukraine

10.02.2010 ALDE members took active part in observing Ukraine's run-off presidential election on 7 February 2010 with Matyas Eörsi (Hungary), Bernard Marquet (Monaco), Silver Meikar (Estonia), Andrea Rigoni (Italy) and Paul Wille (Belgium). In his statement to the press Matyas Eörsi, head of the PACE delegation and member of the ALDE Bureau declared:

"Some say the Orange Revolution has failed. I say no. Thanks to the Orange Revolution, democratic elections in Ukraine are now a reality.

Both candidates must accept the democratic nature of this election. And so should all Ukrainians.

Ukraine deserves applause. Thousands of election officials, millions of voters braved the icy temperature of minus 17 C degrees to demonstrate their commitment to democracy.

In democratic elections, electoral law should be the anchor of stability. In this election, it is the election law that almost became the source of instability. We repeat and underscore our recommendation to Ukraine to adopt a unified electoral code to govern all future elections.

This election changes the president, but the challenges facing Ukraine remain the same. Oligarchs. Corruption, Constitutional uncertainties, to name just a few.

We, the Council of Europe, are friends of Ukraine, and we are friends of democracy. We will continue to help you on this wonderful but difficult journey. But in the end, the work must be done by you.

I wish best of luck! You will also need determination and endurance!"
