Defending Human Rights in Belarus
4.10.2011 On Tuesday afternoon, the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), in cooperation with Freedom House, hosted a round table discussion on the human rights situation in Belarus. Flyer
Continuous human rights violations, detention of political opponents and open harassment of civil society organisations raise serious concerns. In spite of the recent release of several political prisoners, one cannot say that the human rights situation improves in Belarus, since political opponents remain in prison and those released are not acquitted of all charges.
"We strongly condemn the arrest and detention of Ales Bialiatski" said Anne Brasseur, President of the ALDE. "One may say that we cannot do much for Belarus. But that is not a reason to do nothing at all…. We can speak up. We will make sure that we are heard. That the human rights defenders are heard."
The discussion hosted speakers from the Belarusian Human Rights House and the Human Rights Centre "Viasna," Tatsiana Reviaka and Uladzimir Labkovich, Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg and Rapportueur of the Poltical Affairs Committee on the Situation in Belarus Andres Herkel. The round table was attended by members of the PACE, including the Chair of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights Christos Pourgourides, members of the secretariat of the Council of Europe and Permanent Representatives to the Council of Europe.
