Marieluise Beck: "Putin is president of a managed democracy - the voters had no choice"

Marieluise Beck (ALDE, Germany) who observed the recent parliamentary and presidential elections in Russia commented on the outcome of yesterday's vote:

"Putin is president of a managed democracy - the voters had no choice. The Russian elections on March 4 have taken place without a real political debate or viable opposition because of President Vladimir Putin's crackdown on the media and critics. The result of elections are supposed to be uncertain. In Russia, this was not the case. Real opposition candidates, like Yabloko's Grigory Yavlinsky were not allowed to run. By abusing government resources the Kremlin finally ensured that the ultimate winner of the election was never in doubt. Putin is president of a managed democracy, not of free and fair elections"
