Election of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe

Addressing the Assembly, Mrs Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger said it was a great honour for her to be the German Federal Government's candidate for the office of Secretary General of the Council of Europe and thanked all Assembly members who supported her. "I congratulate Mr Jagland on his re-election and wish him good luck for his future work and all success in dealing with the great challenges that the Council of Europe faces today. I want the Council of Europe to make full use of its unique potential and to become Europe's human rights conference," - she concluded.
Mr Thorbjorn Jagland delcared he would "continue to be Secretary General for all the members in this Chamber, all the political groups and all the member states. Europe simply cannot afford to create new dividing lines".
