In the debate Mrs Mailis Reps (Secretary General of ALDE Bureau, Estonia) raised concerns about recurrent harassment of human rights lawyers in some Council of Europe member states, while Mrs Chiora Taktakishvili (ALDE member, Georgia) spoke about corruption which put the whole European human rights system under threat.
"Sadly, the situation of human rights raises serious concerns in many Council of Europe member states. Human rights organisations and individuals working in this field are being targeted through hostile legislation. Funding is undermined; activists are accused of tax evasion or are stigmatized as presenting a threat to stability and state security. Corruption is another problem which, according to human rights experts, may generate as much human rights abuse as open political restrictions. Through side events and together with rapporteurs and group speakers, ALDE keeps human rights high on the political agenda - both in Strasbourg and in national parliaments. Those put in jail for their human rights commitment must not be forgotten", said Mailis Reps.
